# Canto Metadata Field Mapping
This article explains how to customize the labels used for consent data when it synchronizes from FairConsent to Canto. By mapping FairConsent’s default fields to your Canto Custom Fields, you ensure that important information such as names, dates, and email addresses appears under the correct metadata labels in your Digital Asset Management (DAM) system.
**Prerequisites:**
Before mapping your fields, make sure the following requirements are met:
- **Integration is Active:** Your Canto instance is already connected to FairConsent (see [Integration Guide](https://fairpicture.freshdesk.com/support/solutions/articles/101000563863-how-to-connect-fairconsent-with-canto)).
- **Admin Permissions:** You must be logged in as an Owner or Admin in FairConsent to access App Settings.
- **Fields Exist in Canto:** The metadata fields you want to sync to must already be created in your Canto instance.
### **Step 1: Customize Your Canto Custom Fields**
Before mapping fields in FairConsent, you need to create or identify the required metadata fields in Canto and copy their exact names.
**1. Access Canto Settings**
- Log in to your Canto instance as an administrator.
- Click the Profile icon in the top-right corner.
- Select Settings.
**2. Navigate to Custom Fields**
- Go to Configuration Options.
- Select Custom Fields.
**3. Create or Modify Metadata Fields**
You can either edit an existing field to match your metadata needs or create a new custom field.
To create a new field, enter the required field name, description, and field type. Click Add to save the field.

**4. Locate and Copy the Metadata Field Name**
- Open any file in Canto.
- Open the Custom Fields section.
- Find the field you created or edited.
- Copy the exact field name (for example: **Giver Name**).
- This name will be used later when mapping the field inside FairConsent. (See Figure 2)

### **Step 2: Map Fields in FairConsent Platform**
Once you have created the required metadata field names in Canto, you can map them to the default labels in the FairConsent platform.
Field mapping ensures that information collected in FairConsent automatically appears under the correct metadata fields in Canto when files are synchronized.
### **Steps to Map Fields**
1. Log in to the FairConsent platform.
2. From the left-hand sidebar, click App Settings.
3. Scroll down to the Metadata Field Mapping section.
4. You will see a list of FairConsent’s default fields (for example: ***Consent Giver Name*)**.
5. In the input field next to “**Consent Giver Name**”, paste the corresponding Canto metadata field name (for example: ***Giver Name***).
6. Repeat this process for any additional fields you want to map.
7. Once you have mapped all the required fields, click Save.
### **How it Works:**
When a user (collector) uploads a consent form to the platform, FairConsent looks at your mapping table. If you have mapped "**Consent Giver Name**" to **"Giver Name**", FairConsent will tell Canto:
***"Take the value from the Name field "Consent Giver Name" and put it into the metadata field in Canto "Giver Name"."***
### **Troubleshooting**
- **Data is missing in Canto:** Make sure the metadata field name entered in FairConsent exactly matches the field name in Canto. Any spelling or formatting differences may prevent the metadata from syncing correctly.
