Do Children Have to Give Consent?

Children are not legally able to provide consent on their own. Instead, consent must be obtained from their legal guardian. Here’s how it works:

Consent by Guardians

• A parent or legal guardian must provide consent on behalf of the child.
• The guardian confirms the terms of consent and gives their approval.

Documenting Child Information

• Once the guardian has provided consent, the collector can add the child's details (e.g., name, age, gender) to the record.

Ethical Considerations

• While children cannot legally provide consent, it's always a good practice to explain the purpose of the consent to the child in an age-appropriate manner.

Note: There are some organisations that require that children give consent in addition to a guardian giving consent on behalf of them. Make sure you adhere to the policy of the organisation or company you collect consent for and check with them to make sure.
